Questions & Answers
Poodles are a type of breed of dog that have become popular for their intelligence and uniquely elegant appearance. It is believed they were first developed as a working retriever in Germany, and over the centuries Poodles have been used as water retrievers, circus performers, service dogs, and companion animals. A prominent breed of dog, Poodles come in three sizes (Standard, Miniature, and Toy) and four distinct coats (Corded, Curly, Standard, and Pet Clippered).
Poodles are a breed known for their unique, curly coat that generally does not shed at all. However, that does not mean you won't end up with a bit of loose fur here and there. Depending on the type of hair on the dog, some Poodles may still shed lightly. Generally, the more expensive, standard Poodle varieties shed the least and are often referred to as hypoallergenic. On the other hand, less expensive Poodle varieties may shed a bit more and are not typically advertised as hypoallergenic.
Poodles are considered a very active breed of dog, so the type of food they eat should be rich in proteins and carbohydrates. Generally, poodles need a balanced diet that includes high-quality kibble that contains essential vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, as well as, cooked vegetables, fruits, and healthy proteins such as chicken, pork, fish, eggs, or potatoes. Although poodles are mostly a high-energy breed, it's important to monitor their calorie intake and provide them with ample exercise to maintain their proper weight.
Preparing to bring home a new Poodle requires consideration and effort. First, you'll need to create a comfortable and secure environment. Make sure there's a safe space for your pup to explore and investigate, such as a puppy pen or play area with plenty of chew toys and dog beds. You'll also want to invest in items that will make life with your pup easier, such as a collar with a leash, food and water bowls, quality potty pads for potty training, and groom supplies.
Poodles are considered smallto medium-sized dogs, depending on the variety. Standard Poodles, the largest type, are generally between 15 and about 22 inches tall at the shoulder, while Toy and Miniature varieties are typically around 10 to 15 inches in height. Although they may be small in stature, Poodles are known for their intelligence and agility, making them suitable for activities such as obedience, agility, and raccoon hunting. Poodles have been around for centuries and remain popular family companions today because of their non-shedding coats and friendly personalities.
Poodles need a significant amount of physical activity to stay healthy and happy. This breed has an abundant amount of energy and tends to enjoy physical activity. However, it is important to remember that each Poodle is an individual and might require more or less exercise depending upon the breed. Generally, most Poodles should be walked for at least 30 minutes a day, preferably in an area where they can run and explore in a secure environment. Additional activities such as Frisbee, fetch, agility courses, and swims are also fun ways to get your Poodle moving.
Poodles are a great breed for first-time owners. Their intelligence and people-oriented nature make them excellent companions, while their relatively low-maintenance grooming requirements make them easy to care for. Poodles are extremely loyal and dedicated friends, making them a great addition to any family. As a bonus, they come in a variety of sizes from toy to standard, meaning you can pick the best size for your home. Plus, they are incredibly active and eager to please, making them a great choice for training and tricks.
Poodles are intelligent, loyal, and love to learn. Training your pup is essential for establishing a relationship of mutual respect and cooperation. Being consistent with your expectations is key. Start with simple commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘heel’ and reward your pooch with treats, verbal praise, or special time together when they do as you request. Next, practice frequently so as not to forget what your pup has learned. A reliable tip is to end each session with a success, so don’t set expectations too high and make your pup feel defeated.
