Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest recognized breeds, and were first bred over 400 years ago. Despite the very common image of poodles in high-maintenance, show-cut groomings, they were originally bred as a water retrieving breed, and their curly coat was designed to help them stay warm and dry in water. Their intelligence has made them a popular breed and excellent for training, and they have won several Best in Show titles in the Westminster Dog Show as well as other competitions. They are very sensitive to their owners' emotions and can often sense when something is wrong.
Poodles do not usually cause allergic reactions in people. While all dog breeds may produce dander (dead skin cells) or saliva, which may cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive, poodles are considered to be hypoallergenic breeds. This means they produce less dander in comparison to other breeds, and that their coat is also less likely to cause an allergic reaction. That being said, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog breed will not cause an allergic reaction in an individual.
You can consult with a veterinarian to receive individualized advice about what not to feed a Poodle. You can also check breed-specific resources for information about appropriate and safe food for Poodles. Additionally, it is wise to familiarize yourself with the individual nutrition needs of your Poodle. Try to avoid feeding them food with high quantities of preservatives, fats, and sugar. Make sure to discuss dietary restrictions for your Poodle with your vet before implementing any changes to their food.
Preparing your home for a new Poodle involves setting up a few basics to make sure your pup's transition into their new home is healthy and happy. First, make sure your home is puppy-proofed: remove any hazardous objects and keep items off the ground that the puppy could get their paws on. Consider investing in quality fencing, as Poodles require plenty of exercise. Make sure to get food and water dishes, some toys, and a few different bedding options so that your pup has plenty of comfortable places to sleep.
Poodles come in four sizes: Standard, Miniature, Toy, and Teacup. Standard Poodles typically weigh between 40 and 70 pounds and are generally between 15 and 22 inches at the shoulder. Miniature Poodles usually weigh between 10 and 20 pounds and are 11 to 15 inches tall. Toy Poodles typically weigh anywhere from 4 to 6 pounds and grow to between 10 and 11 inches tall. Lastly, Teacup Poodles are very small and delicate, often weighing between 2 to 4 pounds and standing 8 inches or less at the shoulder.
Poodles are very active breeds that require daily exercise. Generally speaking, they need at least an hour a day of some form of activity. This could include a walk, a game of fetch, or other activities in which they can use their energy. Injecting some mental stimulation such as an obedience class is also a great way of challenging a Poodle. If possible, try to give them multiple opportunities to exercise both physically and mentally. Working breeds may need more intensive physical and mental stimulation; however, lighter activity can still make a great difference in a Poodle's health.
Poodles are known for their intelligence, good nature, and loving personality, so it is no surprise that they are especially well suited to be a trusted family pet. With the correct training, patience, and guidance from parents, they often get along harmoniously with children. Poodles are gentle and they enjoy playing, which can also make them an ideal pet for children. It is important to note that as with any pet, safety should always be a priority.
Training a Poodle is not necessarily easy, however it is achievable with consistency, patience, and the right an approach. Poodles are highly intelligent and, when owner's provide them with clear leadership and consistent training, they tend to progress quickly in the learning process. Because of their intelligence, it's important to use positive-reinforcement training methods that provide clear instruction and direction without being overly strict or harsh. Doing this will go a long way in ensuring a strong bond between owner and pet. Additionally, having realistic expectations is important.
