Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the oldest breeds in the world that have been around for hundreds of years! The modern poodle breed originated from France and Germany and were originally bred as a duck hunter. They come in three standard sizes, Toy, Miniature, and Standard, all three have a unique personality and a wavy coat that may be single or double. Interestingly, poodles don't actually originate from puddles, the name is based on the German word pudel meaning "to splash in water.
While it's possible to be allergic to any kind of pet, Poodles may be less likely to cause an allergic reaction than other dogs. Poodles have hypoallergenic coats, meaning they don't shed as much as some other breeds. This reduces the amount of allergens released into the air, which can reduce the risk of reactions. However, because allergies are caused by contact with proteins in pet dander and saliva, it's impossible to guarantee that Poodles are 100% allergen-proof.
As a Poodle owner, providing your pup with a healthy and balanced diet is essential for optimal health and wellbeing! A great option is choosing a diet made specifically for toy or small breeds like the Poodle. These diets tend to be lower in fat and contain lots of essential vitamins and minerals to keep your pup healthy. When selecting a food, make sure to do your homework. Read the label and pick a food made of good quality ingredients. Additionally, you may also want to consider adding a few high quality treats and supplements to help ensure your Poodle gets the right nutrients.
Before getting a Poodle, it is important to make sure you are adequately prepared. It's a good idea to have a bed for your pup, preferably a washable one with a waterproof liner. You should also buy a KONG toy, durable chew sticks, and some interactive toys. Don't forget to get the necessary grooming supplies such as a high-quality shampoo, brushes, and combs. Additionally, you should also purchase the necessary food and bowls, a collar and leash, and a few treats.
The size of your Poodle puppy when fully grown will depend on the particular type of Poodle you have. The standard Poodle typically stands 15-24 inches in height and weighs between 45-70 pounds. The miniature version is usually just one third the size of the standard version, so it stands about 10-15 inches and weighs around 15-17 pounds. The smallest toy Poodles are only 7-10 inches tall and weigh approximately 5-8 pounds.
Poodles need quite a bit of exercise to stay healthy and maintain a good physical condition. How much exercise depends on a Poodle's size and age toys or miniature dogs may need less than standards. Generally, adult Poodles should be walked and/or allowed to play in a safe and secure area for at least 30 minutes each day. With that being said, they can benefit from longer bouts of exercise as well. Grooming sessions, agility training, and Frisbee sessions are all wonderful activities a Poodle may enjoy.
