Questions & Answers
Poodles are widely recognized for their smart and engaging personalities as well as for their signature look. They come in 3 sizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy and 4 varieties -solid, Parti, Brindle, and Phantom. Depending on the variety, Poodles typically have thick curly fur and are known for being a low-shedding hypoallergenic breed. With an average lifespan of 10-18 years, Poodles make great family pets and are highly trainable, exhibiting a natural ease in learning commands and tricks.
Poodles have a reputation as being hypoallergenic due to the fact that they have a nonshedding coat, but this doesn't necessarily make them completely allergy free. Poodles can still present allergy issues for some people, just like any other breed. However, many people find that their poodle does not cause any allergic reactions even though they may have had other breeds that did. It is a good idea to be mindful of allergies and monitor any reactions, especially if the family member is especially sensitive.
Knowing what not to feed Poodles is key to keeping them healthy and happy. Firstly, many Poodles have sensitive stomachs, so it is important to consult with your veterinarian about the best foods to feed your pup. Additionally, certain human foods can be dangerous to Poodles. Foods containing xylitol, chocolate, grapes, avocados, yeast, onions, garlic, and raw or undercooked meats or eggs can all be toxic to Poodles. Keep in mind that even foods that are safe for human consumption may not be safe for your pooch.
Preparing your home for a new Poodle is an important task that requires some forethought. First, consider what kind of environment your Poodle will be comfortable in. You may want to set up an area in the house that is partially separate from the other family members for your pup to call its own. This area should be well-ventilated with no drafts and should contain dog-appropriate toys, a bed, and a few cozy blankets. Additionally, make sure to install any necessary toddler locks or guards on cabinets or windowsills where hazardous materials or objects may be accessible to the Poodle.
Poodles come in four sizes as recognized by the American Kennel Club -Toy, Miniature, Standard, and Giant. Toy Poodles are usually 10 inches or under and weigh no more than six pounds. Miniature Poodles stand 11 to 15 inches in height and can reach a weight of 15 pounds. Standard Poodles measure over 15 inches up to 22 inches tall and typically weigh 45 to 70 pounds. Giant Poodles stand over 24 inches in height and can weigh up to 100 pounds or more.
Poodles are usually quite active and have plenty of energy to keep their owners busy. However, it does depend on the specific breed and size of the poodle. Standard poodles are more active and require more daily exercises compared to the smaller breeds such as Miniature Poodles or Toy Poodles. For example, Standard Poodles that are taken for regular walks or runs, will be more energetic and active compared to poodles that are limited to an apartment lifestyle.
Poodles are generally excellent with kids, as long as they are properly socialized. Poodles are highly intelligent, and they often form strong emotional bonds with their human family, making them an ideal pet for children of any age. Poodles are also known to have a positive and fun-loving personality. Additionally, as they are obedient by nature, they can be taught basic commands, making them a great companion for kids.
Poodles are often thought of as intelligent dogs due to their popularity in the show ring, but their intelligence is actually not reflected in their breed standard. While Poodles may be fun-loving and great companion animals, they're generally considered to have average intelligence when compared to other breeds. However, that does not mean that Poodles lack the ability to learn and pick up new behaviors. In fact, they often excel in interactive tasks, working alongside their owner to solve problems. They have an intuitive spirit, often eager for treats or rewards for completing tasks.
