Questions & Answers
Poodles belong to the non-sporting dog group and are considered a standardized breed in the Kennel Club system. They come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Poodles have a pair of rounded eyes, a black nose, and long, hanging ears. They have a soft, curly fur that can range from various shades of brown, white, gray, or silver. Their double-coat is generally naturally hypo-allergenic and low-shedding, which helps make them a popular pet choice.
Poodles have a reputation for being hypoallergenic, but it is not necessarily the case. While their dense coat and minimal shedding help to limit the amount of allergens released into the air, some individuals with allergies may still experience sensitivity to their presence. Poodles' limited dander and saliva production also make them a favorable option for people with allergies. Ultimately, there is no guarantee that someone who experiences allergies will not have an issue with a poodle.
Poodles are generally omnivores, however their diet should be tailored to meet their individual needs. A healthy balanced diet should include fish, poultry, vegetables, and whole grains as well as omega-3 fatty acids which are important for their coat and skin. A good choice is commercial dog food specifically made for poodles as it is formulated for all their nutritional needs. In addition to high-quality dog food and treats, fruits and vegetables can also be given as an additional health benefit.
Poodle uniqueness demands that its owners take special care of the breed's physical, mental, and social health needs. This includes regular, professional grooming, providing plenty of physical and mental stimulation, and ensuring the breed's socialization from an early age. Ideally, the dog should visit a professional groomer four times a year, or more often in the case of owners with more than one Poodle. Prospective owners should also budget for regular visits to the veterinarian to stay up to date on vaccinations and any other routine health care needs.
Poodles come in four distinct sizes – toy, miniature, medium, and standard. Toy Poodles are the smallest, ranging in size from 10 to 15 inches tall and weighing four to six pounds. Miniature Poodles are a bit larger, ranging from 11 to 15 inches tall and weighing between six and nine pounds. Medium Poodles stand from 15 to 18 inches tall and can weigh between 10 and 25 pounds. Standard Poodles are the largest, ranging in size from 22 to 26 inches tall and typically weighing between 40 and 45 pounds.
Generally speaking, most Poodles do love to swim! Their long, webbed feet combined with their intelligence and athleticism make them excellent swimmers. Not only do they enjoy splashing around and getting a good workout in, they also show an eagerness to fetch toys from the water. Plus, their coat is water-resistant and they have good weather tolerance, allowing them to swim in both cold and warm temperatures. That being said, you should still make sure your Poodle is comfortable around and in the water before allowing them to swim as every individual can have different preferences.
Generally speaking, Poodles get along very well with kids. As long as they have been taught the proper manners and have had plenty of socialization with them, most Poodles will become devoted and loving companions to young family members. And since these dogs are people-oriented, they thrive in a two-way companionship with kids. When Poodles feel comfortable around children, they will gladly join in the fun. When properly trained, they will also make a great watchdog.
Training your Poodle is a great way to encourage desirable behaviors, develop a bond between you and your pet, and enrich your pup's life. Begin training your pup with positive reinforcement such as verbal praise and treats. Start with teaching basic commands such as "sit" and "stay," and then move on to other commands such as "come" and "down." Before training your pup, make sure that you have a quiet, distraction-free environment. Each training session should last no more than 10-15 minutes and your pup should always be praised and rewarded for completing tasks.
